Mnagaluru, Feb 25, 2016 :  Disorder and high drama prevailing , MCC - Mangaluru City Corporation council in its special meeting on Wednesday gave approval to the formation of three zones in the city for effective administration. Opposition BJP councillors did not participate in any discussion even as they shouted slogans against the Congress and staged a protest in the well of the House urging Mayor Jesinta Vijaya Alfred to allow for Question Hour.

Whip in the council M. Shashidhar Hegde read out the decisions of the council on various agenda, including the one on formation of zones, placed in the council.  Incidentally, the BJP councillors who had been insisting upon the creation of zones did not participate in any discussion on the matter of creating zones.

Commissioner H.N. Gopalakrishna told media after the meeting on Wednesday that now the decision of the council would be sent to the government for its approval. Initially, the government had asked the corporation to form zones by distributing population equally among the three zones.

As it was not matching, the government was informed that the three zones have been created on the basis of geography and proximity of wards to the zonal headquarters and it had been mutually agreed to do so. Still, the government would be informed again on creating zones on this basis, he said. The Commissioner said that 385 posts of Group C, 19 posts of Group B and 10 posts of Group A officials were vacant in the corporation against the sanctioned posts.

The civic body has 572 sanctioned posts of Group C, 35 sanctioned posts of Group B and 31 sanctioned posts of Group A.

The government has sanctioned three posts of zonal commissioners to the corporation. Currently, it has two zonal commissioners. The zonal commissioner in each zone would be assisted by a development officer (assistant executive engineer – civil), a revenue officer and an assistant revenue officer, an environment engineer, four assistant engineers for civil, electrical, water supply and underground drainage works, and supporting staff.
