Anand was staying in the house of his 20-year-old woman friend in Belthangady after his parents abandoned him, according to the charge-sheet by Belthangady police. Anand offered to marry her after developing intimacy with the girl and went on to have physical relationship with her on March 2, 2014 when she was alone in the house. Two fishermen on a coracle spotted the woman struggling in the river the next morning and brought her to ashore. She was admitted to Government Hospital at Puttur, where she filed a complaint against Anand, he was arrested  on September 10, the charge-sheet stated.

While the girl initially stood by the allegations made in her complaint, she later admitted in the court that the relationship was consensual. The girl incidentally has since delivered the child.
