Mangaluru, Nov 09, 2016: DYFI, Democratic Youth Federation of India, Dakshina Kannada district committee, demanded a government medical college in Mangaluru. A delegation of DYFI members led by district secretary Santhosh Bajal submitted a memorandum to DK DC Dr. K G Jagadeesha on Monday. Santhosh said that the government should monitor the functioning of private hospitals, which are allegedly charging exorbitantly for treatments and clinical tests. "Private hospitals and doctors in Dakshina Kannada district charge exorbitantly from patients. There are complaints that patients are made to undergo unnecessary clinical tests. Private hospitals do not display rates of various treatments and tests. Dead bodies are not handed over if relatives fail to pay the hospital bills," Santhosh alleged. Pressing for a uniform rate chart for private hospitals, Santhosh said private hospitals do not follow any guidelines with regard to fixing of rates for treatments and tests.
"The district administration should intervene and take initiatives to frame guidelines for fixing rates of treatment and tests in private hospitals," he urged. On the functioning of government health centres in the district, Santhosh said the service is not up to the mark. "The number of public health centres and community hospitals in the district does not match the requirement while considering the population. Further, 45% of the sanctioned posts in government hospitals in the district remain vacant. The district administration should take necessary steps to fill the vacancies," he demanded.
