Dalits being targeted condemned at meet

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangaluru, Oct 28, 2015: Addressing the monthly Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (SC/ST) grievances meet at Police Commissioner’s office, Mangaluru,  Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Shantharaju said, inspite of shortcomings, the city police have successfully carried out their duties and any allegations of rude behaviour with the public will be investigated.

Earlier, DSS leader S P Anand accused that the Ullal police didn’t behave properly with Usha Nayak, a woman, who went to file a complaint against drug mafia at Someshwar. Dalit leader Raghu K Ekkar said, he experienced a similar treatment at Bajpe police station.  DCP Shantharaju said that he would take action based on the investigation reports.

Venkatesh from Surathkal town police station limits said, a few people have ousted his family from his 28 cents of land, which was his father’s asset threatening them.  He said, "My father passed away in 2010. I gifted ten cents of land to Kordabbu temple out of 38 cents. Babu Shetty, Rajesh Shetty and Padmanabha Shetty have destroyed my house and coconut trees to construct a house for Anil Mukkari, the newly appointed priest. From past one month I am living in a rented house paying Rs 6,000 per month," he complained.

Anil Mukkari says that the real owner of the land is Sudharshan Shetty.  "I and Venkatesh are family members. According to ’aliyakattu’ tradition, after the death of Venkatesh’s father, I got the priesthood. They only left the house one and half years ago and the whole village had witnessed it. But, now they tell a different story. When upper caste people are helping us, why should we blame them", he asked.   Leaders meanwhile condemned the increasing atrocities against dalits in the country.  Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime and Traffic) Dr Sanjeev Patil was present among others.
