Mangalore, Sep 08, 2014:  Inaugurating the two-day decennial conclave of the Karnataka Chapter of Research Society for Study of Diabetes in India here, Pro chancellor of Nitte University, Dr M Shantharam Shetty, urged doctors to create awareness on diabetes among people.

Dr Shetty also expressed the need for more Indians to take up research in diabetes. Doctors should focus mainly on educating people about dangers of diabetes, which results from the lifestyle. Education plays a crucial role in modern times, where a section of people still believe in ’traditional’ yet scientific crude ways of treatment for diseases such asthma, wherein some practitioners make patients gulp a particular fish.

Referring to research about diabetes, he said that with diabetes cases on the upswing in India, it is a cause for concern that only 0.9% Indians figure in 52,000 research papers on cardiovascular issues and 30,000 papers on diabetes published in medical journals in 2013.

All stakeholders, students including have to take up research work, at least in area of diabetes. "Make use of the records (pertaining to diabetes) that are presently wasted," he said.

While talking about his health schedule, Minister Rai said that he makes it a point to exercise for two-hours everyday. Also, he has not had non-vegetarian food for a decade now. "My tablet intake for diabetes has dipped from three each day to zero and my sugar level is well under control," said Rai.
