Mangaluru, Mar 17, 2015 : People discussing civic issues at a meeting convened by Forum for Justice in Mangaluru on Monday.
A group of citizens at a meeting here on Monday resolved to urge the Mangaluru City Corporation and the government to constitute ward committees as a solution to address many civic issues.
Forum For Justice, Hampankatta, had organised the meeting. The participants, including working president of the forum Dayanath Kotian, said that if the ward committees were formed, solid waste management of the civic body could be monitored effectively.
Padmanabha Ullal, a participant, alleged that garbage was still being transported in open lorries in the city.
According to the terms of contract with the new contractor, it should not be transported in open lorries.
Mr. Kotian alleged that silt from storm water drains had not been removed despite there being only two months remaining for the monsoon. If ward committees were formed, it would have representatives of people of respective wards who could monitor the projects of the city corporation.
Judith Mascarenhas, another participant, suggested that there was no need to wait for the government to constitute the ward committees.
Instead people could have their own committees at the ward level to monitor the works of corporation and address the issues of people.
The participants spoke of lack of footpaths, broken concrete slabs on the storm water drains and lack of parking facilities.
Some people opposed some shop keepers reserving parking slots in front of their shops for themselves though all could park their vehicles there.
The participants also expressed concern over the number of increasing malaria cases in the city.
