Udupi, Dec 03, 2015:  Speaking to media, Avinash Kamath of ’Neralu-Neravu’ said the house owners, who wish to have the saplings in their compound and take care of them for nearly two years, will be given priority. The saplings will also be planted in all the schools across the district, he added. The ’Neralu-Neravu’ Udupi team is taking up a campaign to plant saplings in houses and schools across the district from December 3.

The initiatives are taken up under ’Namma Mane-Namma Mara’ (Our house-our tree) and ’Namma Shale-Namma Mara’ (Our school-our tree) programmes respectively. The saplings will be provided by the team and it will take up the initiative to plant the saplings in the compound.

The team will distribute ’Ashwattha’, ’Aala’, ’Renja’, ’Suragi’, ’Ashoka’, ’Haalemara’, ’Honge’, ’Kahibevu’, ’Holedasavala’, ’Chikkoo’, mango, jack fruit, ’Geru’, cherry and butter fruit saplings.

Kamath added that the purpose of the planting the saplings is to create awareness to safeguard the environment and evoke the emotional bonding with people.

The plants which release oxygen also provide shelter to birds and animals. The Forest Department has come forward to provide saplings at subsidised rates, he said.

The first sapling to initiate the campaign will be planted in Chitpadi at the house of one Chandramohan, who is a businessman. The campaign is taken up as crusade and there is no specified target. The team aims at reach out to maximum number of people. The households where the plants are planted will be monitored by keeping in touch with their owners.
