Doctors all over India on strike today

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, June 25, 2012 : Doctors all over India will be on strike on June 25, Monday, in protest against the National Commission for Human Resources for Health (NCHRH) Bill of 2011 and the Clinical Establishment (Registration and Regulation) Act of 2010, which aim to dissolve medical governing bodies such as Indian Medical Association (IMA) and others to establish a national human resources commission in their place.

All doctors registered with the IMA will stay away from duty from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and clinics and outpatient departments in hospitals will remain closed.

The state unit of the IMA has about 6000 doctors registered with it, and as all of them are in support of the strike, there might be no medical emergency services today.

Dr. Jayaprakash Shetty, president of the Mangalore chapter of the IMA, assured that inpatient sections and trauma and casualty sections will function as usual.

Dr. N. S. Channappa Gowda, deputy commissioner, has requested the chief superintendent of Wenlock Hospital and district health officer to ensure that emergency services are not disturbed.

D. S. Guddodgi, president of the Karnataka Chemists and Druggists’ Association, said that his organization will not join the strike although it is in support of the cause. Medical stores will remain open in the best interests of the public, he added.
