Mangaluru : AJ Hospital & Research Centre here September 20 launched an admired awareness campaign on organ donation along with Mohan Foundation, Chennai, a premier organisation for coordinating organ donation and transplanting in India, September 20, to end on October 10.
The campaign, named ’Jeevanvileena’ was launched by Mangaluru city police commissioner S Murugan by unveiling the campaign logo at City Centre Mall. Speaking to the huge gathering at the function Commissioner S Murugan appreciated the efforts and initiative of AJ Institute. He said that many more organ donations in our country are essential. People should live more productively and feel donating organs is vital. Everyone must follow traffic rules to reduce the high rate of accidents and unnecessary loss of life.
Dr Prashanth Maarla, medical director, AJ Hospital & Research Centre said that it is estimated 160 people per million who face end stage kidney failure, for which transplantation is the best option. There is a need for 25,000 kidney transplants every year, but only 3,500 transplants are per year in India are possible now, the shortage needs to be reduced. Organ donation is not so frequent in this region. Awareness programmes to spread the word and improve matters as much as possible is needed now.
Tulu film actress Sonal Monteiro said that hundreds of people are eagerly waiting for organ donors and it is time for us to provide them a second chance to live.
Deepak and team from AJ Institute sang the theme song of the ’Jeevanvileena campaign’. SDM Law College students performed a show depicting how organs are transported from one place to another and the importance of donating.
Chairman of AJ Institute AJ Shetty, Dr Amitha Maarla, Prashanth Shetty, City Centre executive Saud and others were also present. During this 20-day campaign, there will be a street play by NSS students on September 26, public shows and dance performances on the theme on September 27 and October 4, and an awareness rally on October 7. The campaign will end with a valedictory on October 10.
