Mangalore, Sep 5, 2014: Mangalore University Economics Association (An Association of Professors of Economics) in Association with Vivekananda Centre for Research Studies, Puttur, has launched a mission to encourage Youth participation in agriculture with a slogan “Save Agriculture, Serve Agriculture” on the occasion of Teacher’s Day - Sept 5.
This campaign is the brainchild of MUEA President Vigneshwara Varmudy who is also the Director of Vivekananda Centre for Research Studies. The programme hopes to create awareness among youth and attract them to agriculture through campaigning in various colleges of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts. The mission is implemented through seminars, guest lectures and field visits in association with colleges wherever economics is taught. The campaign on this will be conducted till the end of the academic year 2014-15 in about 150 colleges that come under Mangalore University.
The campaign will be inaugurated on September 18 at Vivekananda College, Puttur, through a one day State level seminar. Over 300 students from colleges under Mangalore University, 100 professors of economics, history and journalism along with 100 farmers are expected to participate.
The main objectives of the mission are, to create an awareness among degree students and other youth about the importance of agriculture, to educate them on various positive aspects of agricultural activities. Making arrangements to interact with successful youth farmers, to analyse the causes for migration of youth from agriculture and to suggest the measures, to request them to save the agriculture sector.
Mangalore University to present best teacher award : The birthday of Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan, popularly known as Teachers’ Day will be celebrated, at Mangala Auditorium in Mangalore University, on September 5, at 11 am.
Kuvempu University former vice chancellor Prof K Chidananda Gowda, Centre for Liquid Crystal Research (Bangalore) former director Prof K A Suresh, Karnataka Tulu Sahitya Academy President M Janaki Brahmavara will be the chief guests for the ceremony, while Mangalore University Vice Chancellor Prof K Byrappa will preside. On this occasion, eminent persons from the Mangalore University jurisdiction Prof K Chidananda Gowda (DK), Prof KA Suresh (Kodagu), M Janaki Brahmavara (Udupi) will be felicitated for their contribution in the field of teaching and research. Mangalore University ‘Best Teachers awards’ will be presented with Rs 25,000 cash award, with citation in recognition of their contribution, said a release.
Best Lecturer award - State level : Shyamala P S, lecturer in Political Science, Govt PU College, Car Street, Mangalore, has been selected for the State-level award of best lecturer. The award will be conferred at the Teacher’s Day function in Mysore on September 5. Shyamala is one among the eight awardees in the State and the only lecturer from DK and Udupi districts.
