Mangalore, April 29, 2014: The Indian Academy of Pediatrics (IAP) DK branch as a part of their children’s health care awareness campaign organised a seminar on 27.04.14 at Golf Club Hall, Pilikula.

HOD of Pediatrics, Manipal Hospital, Bangalore Prof. (Dr.) Bhaskar Shenoy was the resource person and delivered a guest lecture with audio visual presentation on “Present Typhoid Situation and Future Prospective – An Update” and dwelt at length on the typhoid disorder, its causes, symptoms and remedial measures.

In his address, he revealed that typhoid is epidemic and very serious infectious disease of the gastrointestinal tract that is caused by bacteria. All people are equally susceptible owing to water and food contamination, characterised with high fever, joint pain, sore throat, abdominal ache, nausea, weakness, diarrhoea etc. During the toxic stages there is a possibility of intestinal perforation or haemorrhage also, he alerted. It will lead to complications if it is neglected and not detected and treated in initial stages and sometimes resulting in deaths also, he cautioned. Antibiotic drugs, vaccines are the remedial measures, he added.

However, precautionary and preventive measures are available in the form of drugs and vaccines. It is endemic in nature and is more prevalent in the Asian and African countries. He advocated a very advanced research and study in this direction. He also revealed that the world’s largest outbreak of typhoid was reported in Sangli (Maharashtra) in the year 1975-76 wherein many fell victims to this dreaded disease, he added. Later he had interaction with the participants.

On this occasion Eminent Paediatrician and Prof. of Pediatrics Dept, Fr. Muller’s Medical College & Hospital Dr. Varadaraj Shenoy released the “IAP DK Branch Members Directory” compiled and edited by Rtn. M.V. Mallya. Eminent and Senior Paediatricians Prof. Dr. Sanjeev Rai, Prof. Dr. Santhosh Soans and Dr. Subba Rao were present on this occasion. IAP DK Branch President Dr. A. Shivaram Rai presided. Secretary Dr. Ashvij Shriyan proposed a vote of hanks.
