Mangaluru, April 13, 2015 : Sunil Shetty, the popular film star who hails from Mangaluru, is expected to inaugurate the 19th Federation Cup Senior Athletics Championship on April 30 at the Mangala Stadium. Mangaluru city will host the national athletics event between May 1 and May 3.
Reviewing the hurried on going preparations for the national level event, Minister of State for Youth Services and Sports K. Abhayachandra Jain said he had met the film star a few days ago at Mulky and he agreed to inaugurate the sports event and he added that also other persons of national stature would take part in the inaugural ceremony.
It was speculated that the four-day event would cost around Rs. 1.50 crore. The State government has promised Rs. 1 crore while further amount will be generated from donations by public sector undertakings, major private industrial units, public sector banks, deemed universities and also builders and trade bodies. Rs 20 lakhs is ear marked from MCC - Mangaluru City Corporation.
At least Rs. 25 lakh would be spent towards 300 rooms for accommodation of athletes, officials and guests in hotels spread out in the city. Rooms in the new Circuit House and other guest houses will also be made use of.Rs. 10 lakh minimum would be needed towards publicity of the event that would include the use of three FM channels and six local television channels. Around 700 athletes and 200 officials will be taking part in the event it is estimated.
G. Parameshwara , President of Karnataka Amateur Athletics Association inspected the preparation for the event in Mangala Stadium and Karavali grounds. He expressed satisfaction over the preparations, and said the association was keen on having a permanent floodlight facility at the Mangala Stadium. Minister Jain, who was present said his department would push this project with the State government if a proposal was made by the Athletics Association, he added there is much to be done for the success of this sports meet.
