Human trafficking case – 5 accused remanded to judicial custody

Mangalore, Sep 14 ,2012Five of the 13 people arrested in connection with a major human trafficking case were remanded to judicial custody for a period of 14 days on September 13, Thursday. The same people had been remanded to police custody on Tuesday.

The five are Dinesh Kumar (27) of Tamil Nadu, Yakoob (40) of Coimbatore, Thavarassa (46) of Shri Lanka, Saleem, and Shahjahan (33) of Palakkad.

The mega human trafficking racket was busted by the city police on Saturday. They had sought custody of the five for interrogation.

The police have confiscated Rs. 5.68 from these people and are searching for their accomplice who is hiding in Kerala. The five were instrumental in arranging logistics to transport the Shri Lankan refugees to Australia and the police want to find out exactly how they were involved in the trafficking.

Madhava Suvarna, who sold the boat to the human traffickers, has succeeded in getting bail.
