Mangaluru, Sep 16, 2016: Like-minded persons from different organisations will stage a round-the-clock hunger protest on October 2 at Uchila, demanding the implementation of scientific measures for management and disposal of solid waste.
President of Nagrika Samithi Yuva Vedike, Someshwara Uchila, Pramod Ucchil, said "In the last four years, rampant disposal of solid waste into the Uchila river has been leading to serious diseases, yet the authorities concerned have turned a blind eye."
Ucchil added that, in the absence of a dedicated system, people, especially outsiders, have been disposing refuse in water bodies. "It includes not just food waste - vegetarian and non-vegetarian - but also the carcasses of poultry animals and also other animals," he said.
"Earlier, when the water in the wells used for drinking water purpose was found contaminated, the issue was brought to the notice of the minister for health and family welfare. Examination of water samples showed that the water was found unfit for human consumption. Although the local Someshwara Gram Panchayat was asked to act on the report, the solution still remains on paper," said Ucchil.
It is a problem of not just Someshwara village, but also neighbouring Talapady and Kotekar villages.
Ucchil said, although the land has been allotted for Someshwara Gram Panchayat at Kondanaru to dispose the waste, it remains to become a reality.
