I-Day bonanza for Udupi district - focus on tourism and people friendly development

UDUPI, Aug 16,  2014:   In his main address Urban Development Minister Vinay Kumar Sorake after receiving the guard of honour at M G M College in Udupi on Independence day, he  said that measures have been taken to develop tourism in the district.  Stating that attempts have been made to relax coastal regulatory zone (CRZ) norms on the lines of Kerala and Goa models, Sorake said that a proposal has been sent to the Centre in this regard.  The 68th independence day was celebrated with pomp and grandeur with tricolor unfurled in every nook and corner of the district.


A proposal has also been sent to the government to develop four connective fisheries stretch at the cost of Rs 2,295 lakh. Rs 4,500 lakh is released to introduce country crafts similar to Kerala model in Maravanthe beach and Rs 3,000 lakh has been released to construct port in Koderi. He said permanent sea wall is built at the coast of Rs 15 crore in the coastal stretch of the district.

Noting that the government has taken up measures to ensure basic infrastructural amenities such as drinking water, roads, toilets and hygienic conditions to citizens, on priority basis, he said the government has taken up national highway widening process at the cost of Rs 450 lakh. The State government under NABARD scheme, has initiated measures to develop rural and district main stretches at the cost of Rs 645 lakh. Besides, as many as 11 construction work of first grade college buildings will be taken up, Sorake said.

The minister said under multi village drinking water scheme, Yedthare, Byndoor, Shiroor and Paduvari villages in Kundapur taluk are considered. The government has approved Rs 1,050 lakh worth project initiated to provide drinking water to Nada, Senapur, Badakere and Hadavu villages. The first hand report over initiating drinking water facilities in multi village drinking water scheme to the areas like Tenkanidiyur, Hejmadi, Chantaru in Udupi, Mala in Karkala and Citthur in Kundapur has been prepared and will be forwarded to the government. Action plan for separate drinking water schemes to be introduced in Kota, Sasthana and Saligarma, Kaup, Mallar and Uliyargoli is chalked out.

Emphasising on education, the minister said that government approval has been received to start ITI Colleges in Byndoor and Yellur. A separate stadium will be established in Udupi to encourage the rural students interested in sports. Around 13.10 acres of land is identified for the purpose. The minister added that science center will be set up in Belapu adjacent to the proposed sub center of Mangalore University.

Special care for people :  Stating that the people in both rural and urban areas will be given title deeds under Land Reform Act Section 94C and 94 CC. The pension adalath is held in order to bring the facilities announced by the government to the door steps of the public. Besides revenue adalath is held. Two revenue adalaths have been held in Byndoor and Kaup respectively. As many as 1,20,000 students have received income and caste certificates in their respective schools and colleges, he added.  Pointing out at the government’s inclination towards promoting decentralisation concept in administration, the minister said that special Tahsildar office has already been inaugurated in Byndoor. He said land has been earmarked for police training school in Uppur. Rs one crore has been released to develop Hasthashilpa in Manipal in the process of promoting art.

The minister added that action plans are chalked out to develop basic infrastructural facilities in Karkala in the backdrop of forthcoming Bahubali Mahamasthakabhisheka in January. Besides measures are taken to organise state level athletics tournament in the month of November 29 to December 1 in the district.

Maithrey / Manasvini :  He said the government has introduced ‘Maithrey’ scheme for the transgender and ‘Manasvini’ for the divorcee and unmarried women above 40. As many as 1011 women have received the benefits of ‘Manasvini’ scheme. Under 2nd stage ‘Nagarotthana’ sceheme, Udupi district has received Rs 45 crore, of which, Udupi CMC received Rs 30 crore and Karkala, Kundapur and Saligrama town panchayaths received Rs five crore each respectively. At present, Rs 32 crore worth works are completed. He said the greater Udupi concept is envisioned by incorporating 80-Badagabettu, Kidiyur, Kadekar, Ambalpadi, Kutpadi, Alevoor, Korangrapadi and Udyavara. He said plans have been chalked out to convert Brahmavar into town panchayath by upgrading Baikadi, Handadi, Chantaru, Heroor, Varamballi, Haradi and Kumragodu villages. He said Rs 85 crore worth UGD programme is sanctioned to Udupi CMC under 2nd stage KUDCEMP Yojana. The government has released Rs 199 lakh to compensate Endosulfan victims. As many as 1,125 victims have already received the pension, he added.

As many as 20 teams took part in the march-past. Cultural  shows and bonhomie marked 68th I-Day in Udupi district.
