ITI Students protest semester system

ITI Students protest semester system

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangaluru, Oct 15, 2015: ITI students protested against the loopholes in the semester system, at  the DK  DC’s office on Wednesday  Oct 14.  Students, under the aegis of  SFI - Students’ Federation of India, submitted a memorandum to Rajeev Prathap Rudy, the Union Minister of State for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship. They urged the government to drop negative marks in examinations.

The current system cuts one mark for every four wrong answers by students, which proves a problem for the students. The decision to introduce semesters, the protesting students said, was ’unscientific, and would harm the prospects of students’.

Introduction of a semester system has brought down the hours of practical learning. It has affected students employability. There is also confusion among the teachers on the semester system, teaching methods and other related matters, which needs to be solved. Instead of semester system, the previous annual system of examination should be introduced. If a student fails either in theory or practical examination, he or she should be made to rewrite the exam in which he/she has failed rather than rewriting both the practical and theory exams.

The SFI district president Nithin Kuthar said that the certificate of completing the ITI should be issued immediately after the completion of the course, to help the students pursue their careers.

Inordinate delay in getting the certificate affects the students who have completed the course. The government should introduce the National Council for Vocational Training curriculum. Stipend and scholarships should be provided for the students.
