Mangalore, Feb 13: Several journalists from city staged a protest in front of the police head quarters in City demanding to suspend Bajpe police station sub-inspector Pramod for allegedly assaulting and abusing Rahim Ujire, a reporter of a Kannada television channel.
A complaint has been handed over to IGP-western range, Gopal Hosur and superintendent of police Dr A subrahmanyeshwar Rao to suspend Bajpe PSI Pramod immediately.
Earlier, Rahim, Ujire, a local reporter of a Kannada channel was allegedly assaulted, abused and lodged at the Bajpe police station for over two hours on Saturday February 13.
It is said that Rahim Ujire, reporter of Kasturi Kannada channel, was waiting for the bus at the Bajpe-Kaikamba road, when Bajpe Police sub-inspector Paramod with few constables came to the spot and enquired of his identity. He was taken to police station even after Rahim identified himself as a reporter, where he was abused and beaten up by the police. He camplained that, he was illegally held by the police for more than two hours.
However, SI Pramod denied the charge of thrashing Rahim and said that, Rahim was taken to the station due to his rude behavior. Rahim was admitted to Wenlock hospital soon after releasing from Bajpe police station.
The district journalists are planning to hold a protest demanding concerned SI’s suspension. A memorandum with respect to this has been submitted to inspector general of police (western range) Gopal Hosur and superintendent of police A Subrahmanyeshwar Rao.
