Mangalore, June 28, 2012 : Addressing the gathering at the prize distribution ceremony of the First Division League Championship 2010 – 11 at Mangalore Club, Dayanand Pai, chairman of the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) Mangalore Zone, said that the association is determined to construct a cricket stadium in Mangalore.
Revealing further details, he said that the KSCA is trying hard to find land for the purpose and added that a number of business groups are extended their support. He said that the association hopes that CM D. V. Sadananda Gowda will also lend a helping hand.
He also stated that he will provide scholarships for financially backward talented cricket players from Mangalore.
A. V. Shashidhar, KSCA coordinator for Mangalore Zone, said that the Royal Challengers KSCA Cricket Academy will become functional in Mangalore at Adyar Sahyadri College. He also lamented that lack of proper infrastructure is obstructing the development of cricket in Mangalore.
Stating that Mangalore has a number of talented cricket players, who are capable of representing the state at the national levels, he said that Mangalore’s only problem is that it lacks facilities.
Further, he said that one need no longer play in Bangalore to become a recognized cricket player because the KSCA is providing proper facilities in all its zones, as a result of which even non Bangalore zones are now grabbing awards and prizes.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Srikanth Rai, KSCA Mangalore Zone convener, said that cricket should be given importance in schools, adding that the association already has school cricket tournaments, comprising teams from Udupi, DK, and Kodagu. Besides, the association is planning to start cricket tournaments for colleges too.
A cash prize of Rs. 75,000 was given to City Crickets, who won the First Division Cricket Championship. The DK Cricket Association got a prize of Rs. 60,000 for being the first runners-up. The second runner-up prize of Rs. 30,000 was shared between Mangalore Occasionals and Mangalore Sports Club. The Best Bowler and the Best Batsman awards were conferred on Sampath Kumar and Sachin Kumar, respectively.
