KVK Brahmavar celebrates Fish Farmers Day

Udupi, July 11, 2017: The National Fish Farmers Day was celebrated at the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) at Brahmavar in Udupi district on Monday. A programme on breeding fish in agricultural pits was also held. Inaugurating the Fish Farmers Day, P. Parshwanath, Deputy Director of Fisheries, said that the Fisheries Department was implementing several programmes for the welfare of fishermen and fish farmers. The department bought fry and cultivated them for some time and then distributed them to fish farmers. The department distributed fingerlings for ponds and lakes managed by the gram panchayats. It also gave training to fish farmers in cultivating fish, he said.

B. Dhananjaya, senior scientist and head of Krishi Vigyan Kendra, said that India was in the second place in the world in fish farming, after China. The kendra too reared fry and then sold it to fish farmers. The farmers should not depend on just one aspect of farming, they should follow integrated farming. This was because if they incurred loss in one area, they could make profits in the other, he said.

Vinod, in-charge Principal of Diploma College of Agriculture, Shivakumar G.M., Assistant Director of Fisheries, Srinivas H. Hulkoti, subject expert, and others were present. As many as 70 persons participated in the training programme.
