Mangalore. Dec 14, 2012 : Nine fishermen from Kanyakumari, who were aboard a sinking boat have been rescued by the Coast Guards nearly 33 nautical miles off the Karwar coast on December 13, Wedneday.
All the nine fishermen in the boat “Vijovin” including its Captain Kevin were brought to Karwar shores safely on Thursday morning. According to the boat owner Joseph Antony, the boat had a 600 kg catch including squid.
The fishermen had ventured into deep sea fishing from Kochi coast on December 3.They sensed danger when water began to enter the engine room on December 12, Wednesday noon.‘Sankalp’ the rescue ship of the Coast Guards reached the distressed boat in an hour. The holes in the boat were plugged temporarily and the boat towed towards Karwar with the help of other fishing boats, Commandant of Coast Guards (Operations and Planning) Rajendra Singh Sapal said.
The total loss is yet to be ascertained.
