Manipal, Nov 12, 2016: Again a green corridor was established to transport organs from a brain dead person from Kasturba Hospital, Manipal on Nov 11, Friday. This is the fifth instance of organ donation carried out by the hospital in the last three weeks.
According to the hospital, Rapid Action Force constable Lawrence Selvaraj, 39,was admitted at the neurosurgery department with a head injury he sustained after he fainted at Ajjarkadu. He was suffering from brain haemorrhage.
He was declared brain dead as per the protocol stipulated by the Transplantation of Human Organ Act 1994 by four senior doctors at 1pm on Thursday and the second declaration was done at 8pm on the same day. The family members voluntarily came forward to donate his organs. He is survived by wife and two young kids. Lawrence joined the service in 1998. His father was also a policeman and served at Brahmavar police station.
As per the approval of ZCCK, Lawrences’s heart valves, corneas, kidneys and liver were harvested on Friday at 6.42am. His liver was transported to Bengaluru and one of the Kidneys to Mangaluru. The harvesting surgery was performed by Dr Arun Chawla, Dr Padmaraj Hegde and Dr Zeeshan from the department of urology, Kasturba Hospital, Manipal. Dr Anitha Shenoy from department of anaesthesia and Dr Ravindra Prabhu, head, department of nephrology supported the entire process.
