Kasargod, Feb 22, 2014 :The foundation for a fisheries port at Manjeshwar Hosabettu Kadappura was laid on February 21, Friday by Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy. The project has been taken up at a cost of Rs 50 crore.
In his address, the chief minister said the works on the new port would be completed within three years.
He also announced on the occasion that as many as 7500 houses will be constructed for poor fishermen of the costal belt and added the government would seek funds from HUDCO for the purpose.
K Babu, Kerala Minister for Fisheries and Ports, presided over the function. K C Joseph, Minister of Rural Development, P Karunakaran, MP, CT Ahmed Ali, Manjeshwar MLA and others were present.
The Chief Minister later laid the foundation for 11 houses to be constructed for the families of Endosulfan victims. He even inaugurated the St Gregorian College at Perla.
The new Vellarikundu taluk was also inaugurated by the Kerala CM. However, the inaugural function was marred by a mishap when the metal roof of the stage collapsed injuring five persons just as flower petals were being showered from a helicopter. The dignitaries present on stage however escaped unhurt.
