Mangaluru, Dec 8, 2015 : Having introduced a calendar in 2015 with the intention of showcasing various activities of the academy to its stakeholders, the academy has decided to continue the same for 2016, the fact that it received good public feedback for its efforts this year, noted Roy Castelino, president of the academy. Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy is all set to bring out a slice of Konkani culture and history in its myriad forms in a calendar yet again.
Releasing the calendar for 2016 Dec 7, Monday, Castelino said the academy held a four-day workshop for six artists and tasked them to come get up paintings that depict Konkani culture. "We have picked up the 12 best such paintings and used them in the calendar," Roy said, adding that paintings of artists Veena Srinivas, Sapna Noronha, Vishwas M, Wilson D’Souza, Jeevan Salyan, and Ravi Wagle have been used. Writer Vittori Karkal has described the paintings.
If Veena’s painting is about ’Kavikale’ and ’rangoli’, Sapna Noronha has painted a Christian wedding and pottery making. The finer nuances of Siddi dance and deeparadhane done by this tribal community is the focal point of Vishwas’ painting. Christmas revelry and ’choodi’ pooja has been captured by Wilson, while Jeevan has painted agriculture and nine forms of Konkani dances. The fishing activities of the kharvi (fishermen) community is the theme of Ravi’s art work.
The academy has also specially adopted a painting P M Kumar’s art work in the calendar. The art work shows an artist playing the traditional Konkani music instrument ’gumat’. Roy said this venture of the academy will give non-Konkani speaking populace a snap shot about the various traditions inherent to the different communities that sp
