Mangalore, May 29, 2014: Mohammed Barik (28), son of Karim, a daily wage labourer resident of Harekala, was hospitalized after being allegedly beaten up by contractor Sattar and his brother and the police on May 28. The allegation was that Barik had stolen from the contractors house.
Mohammed Barik had gone to the house of his sister in Kalpade near Amblamogaru. It is said that Sattar who stays in the neighbourhood took away Barik in his Omni on the pretext that there was some work for him. As they reached Sevantigudde area, Sattar and his brother Asif reportedly assaulted Barik.
It is said that they threatened Barik and demanded to know whether he had committed a theft in their house. They then handed him over to the Konaje police. It is alleged that the sub-inspector and a constable there assaulted him with wooden sticks and iron rods forcing him to admit the theft, in the presence of Sattar.
DYFI condemned the assault on Barik, and said that a complaint would be lodged with higher police officials. Rafik Harekala of DYFI threatened to launch a protest if action is not taken against the guilty and the innocent are compensated.
