Mangaluru, Jan 10, 2016: Minister for health and family welfare U T Khader said here that the construction of new 275 bed block for century old Government Lady Goschen Hospital in the city was taken up without providing information to his department. A portion of the 163 year old government hospital was demolished in 2011 to facilitate construction of new building. The new building is being developed under CSR activities of MRPL - Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Limited, an ONGC - Oil and Natural Gas Commission company at an estimated cost of Rs 21.7 crore. However, even after five years, the work of the new 12,000 sqft building has not been completed.
Minister Khader said that the contractor, who delayed the work, has been suspended and the work has been handed over to another company. The minister now promises that the new building Lady Goschen Hospital will be completed by the end of April 2016.
"The work of new building for Lady Goschen Hospital has been continuing without providing information to health department. We have now suspended the contractor, who was delaying the work, and the work has been given to a new company. Further, we also have directed the department to black list the contractor, who delayed the work. Very soon, the first and second floor of the new building will be ready," Khader said.
The minister said the health department has earmarked Rs 10.46 crore under the National Rural Health Mission for the construction of 60-bed maternity and child health (MCH) wing at Lady Goschen Hospital. The construction MCH block will start only after the completion of first phase work.
