Mangalore, Jun 8: Pope Benedict XVI has conferred a special honor on late legendary Konkani singer Mr. Wilfy Rebimbus, who was also known as Konkan Koghul, in recognition of his love for the Roman Catholic Church as well as his spectacular contributions to the Konkani-speaking community all over the world.
This papal honor, titled “PRO Ecclesia ET Pontifice,” will be conferred posthumously on Wilfy Rebimbus at Milagres Church on June 13, Sunday by Bishop of Mangalore Diocese Dr. Aloysius Paul D’Souza on the occasion of the feast of St. Anthony. Meena Rebimbus, the wife of late Mr. Wilfy Rebimbus, will receive the honor from the bishop.
The pope conferred this honor on Mr. Wilfy Rebimbus through his letter dated Feb 25, 2010, which was the 40th wedding anniversary of Wilfy and Meena Rebimbus. Unfortunately, it reached the bishop’s house only after his demise. Also known as “Father of Konkani Music,” Wilfy Rebimbus expired on March 9, 2010 at Fr. Muller Hospital, Mangalore.
Vishwas Rebimbus, legendary singer, says that his father would have felt privileged to receive this honor and that he will now surely rejoice with the angels.
The parishioners of Jeppu, where Mr. Rebimbus resided, have expressed great happiness at the papal honour conferred on him. A Eucharistic celebration will be held on June 20, Sunday at St. Joseph’s Church, Jeppu in honor of the soul of late Mr. Wilfy Rebimbus. A brief function will be held after the Holy Mass. Everybody is invited for these ceremonies.
