Mangalore, June 26, 2012: An MCC team raided two plastic manufacturing units in Baikampady on June 26, Tuesday.
The team comprised Manjunath R. Shetty, environmental engineer, and Yashwanth, Poovappa, Sushanth, Santhosh, Babu Mallanna, and other sanitation inspectors. The raid was conducted under the directions of the MCC commissioner.
The strange behavior of the driver of a parked Tata 407 on the premises of Blue Chip caught the team’s attention and they immediately inspected the van. They found several gunny bags containing plastic carry bags less than 20 micron packed in the van.
The in-charge of the unit revealed upon interrogation that the lorry belongs to Blue Chip and that the bags it contains were sold for recycling. He however could not produce the bill.
The team, therefore, took the lorry and its driver to Panambur Police station, where the driver said that the vehicle and the plastic bags belong to him and were brought from Mumbai to Mangalore for recycling, adding that he was taking the bags to recyclers. However, he was not able to give a convincing reply when asked about the receipt or the identity of the recycling companies. The team, therefore, slapped a fine of Rs. 1000 on him and seized the plastic carry bags.
The carry bags will be turned over to the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board, which will investigate the matter.
