Mangalore, Apr 28: The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-HABITAT) will provide a grant of USD 1,00,000 to Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) as per its Water and Sanitation Programme, said K N Vijayaprakash, the commissioner of the MCC.
The MCC will use this grant to establish community-based bio-gas plants and decentralized mini waste and water treatment plants in selected wards, organize public awareness programmes on solid waste management, and encourage self-help groups to collect solid waste from houses. The commissioner said that bio-gas plants enable effective solid-waste management and also produce energy.
The UN-HABITAT, which has its head offices in Nairobi in Kenya, has officially agreed to sanction the grant within 2 years. The corporation council has approved the projects; and a proposal has been sent to the state government for approval, he said.
The corporation will have to make a matching contribution in order to receive the UN-HABITAT grant. The contribution can be in the form of cash or kind. However, the government has to first approve the projects.
