Mangalore, Nov 24: The Mangalore University inaugurated its Kanakadasa Research Centre on Nov 23, Monday. B Shivarama Shetty, the coordinator of the centre, said that the centre will publish a comprehensive volume containing the life, works, teachings, and contributions of Kanakadasa.
Mr. Shetty informed press people that the centre has received a sum of Rs 1 crore from the state government and hopes to use the funds to publish a comprehensive compilation of works already published in newspapers, journals, books, and souvenirs. The centre has already made a collection of 300 important writings from various libraries in Mangalore, Kuvempu, Hampi, Dharwad, Mangalore, Bangalore universities and from Karnataka Theological College.
Mr. Shetty also said that the centre plans to organize a series of lectures to disseminate the teachings and philosophy of Kanakadasa called “Kanaka Chintana” at 15 different venues in DK, Kodagu, and Udupi before the end of this financial year. He said that the centre also plans to organize “Kanaka Smruthi” on the university campus and a seminar “Social Justice Propagated by Kanakadasa” in January.
K Raghupathi Bhat, Udupi MLA, inaugurated the centre and also the new building of the Employment Information and Guidance Centre of the University. K M Kaveriappa, the vice chancellor of the university, said that the state government has sanctioned funds for the establishment of many such centres in Kaginele, Udupi, and Dharwad to conduct research on the life and teachings of Kanakadasa.
