Udupi, Feb 6, 2015: After the Manipal gang rape incident in June, 2013, there was a vociferous demand by women’s groups to have a women’s police station either in Manipal or Udupi.
This demand is set to fructify as the Mahila Police Station which is operating in Kundapur will be shifted to Udupi. The government had given its nod for this move. The new Mahila Police Station will come up on the first floor of the Udupi Town Police Station building here.
The new office for the Mahila Police Station is being constructed at a cost of Rs. 10 lakh in the Town Police Station building. The construction is likely to be completed in a month or two. Though Udupi has been a district headquarters for the last 18 years, it did not have a women’s police station. The women’s police station is expected to deal with cases such as dowry harassment and cases related with women in a better way as they are manned by women.
The sanctioned strength for the women’s police station is one woman inspector, two women sub-inspectors, seven women head constables and 21 women police constables.
The currently operational women’s police station operating in Kundapur has a woman sub-inspector, a woman assistant sub-inspector, four male head constables, three women head constables and 10 women police constables.
