Malpe: Country boat fishermen offer Samudra Pooja; venture into sea

Udupi, June 20, 2013: Country boat fishermen of Malpe offered Samudra Pooja- prayers to the Lord of the Ocean on June 19, Wednesday, before embarking on fishing in traditional boats.

The country boat fishing is opted by the fishermen during this time of the season every year when there is an official 57 day ban on deep sea fishing with effect from June 15.

On Wednesday, fishermen first offered prayers at the Bennekudru Kulamastiamma and Vadabhandeshwara Temple and paid their obeisance to the Lord of the ocean by offering Prasadam.  They prayed that the fishing would be a smooth sail affair during monsoon without any eventuality.

 The country boat fishing which will be held from June 15 to August 10. Around 20,000 fishermen will be venturing into fishing in around 8000 country boats during the period.
