Udupi, Aug 19, 2015: The police arrested a person on the charge of theft and recovered several stolen items from him at Kalya village coming under Karkala Rural Police Station on the evening of August 17.
According to the police, Ravidas Kudva and his friends tried to stop a car at Kalya village, which was coming from Renjal village. Mr. Kudva and his friends had received the message over telephone that the car was involved in a futile theft bid at Renjal.
Though the car driver tried to dodge the group, the vehicle went and overturned in a slope area.
When Mr. Kudva and his friends reached the spot, the car driver identified himself as Umar Farook. There were a sliver lamp, a panchaloha idol, and other silver items used in a temple in the car.
Farook said that his friend Hajim and his associates had stolen the items from a temple.
A case had been registered under Sections 279 (rash driving), 337 (endangering life or personal safety of others), 457 (house breaking), 380 (theft) of Indian Penal Code at Karkala rural police station and investigations were on, the police said.
Two held on
extortion charge
The police arrested two persons on charge of extortion at Kaup on August 17.
According to the police, the accused had been identified as Rohit (23), a resident of Udupi, and Shivaraj (24), a resident of Bommasandra near Bengaluru. The duo were threatening a businessman each from Shirva and Manipura villages and demanding money claiming that they were henchmen of the underworld don Ravi Poojary.
The businessmen lodged a complaint with the police, who traced the duo and arrested them. A case had been registered under Sections 387 (extortion) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of Indian Penal Code at the Kaup police station and investigations were on.
The duo was produced before the court, which remanded them in judicial custody till August 31, the police said.
