Mangaluru, March 21, 2016: The Central Crime Branch Police have arrested Melvin Biswas, a resident of an apartment at Kadri here, for allegedly being involved in cricket betting. They have recovered his mobile phone, the log book containing booking details and Rs. 3 lakh in cash. According to Police Commissioner M. Chandra Sekhar, the CCB team was tipped off that betting was going on in the apartment at Kadri for the New Zealand-Australia T-20 match on Friday. They raided the apartment and seized Biswas’s mobile phone and other material related to betting.

On investigation as per the orders of a local magisterial court, Mr. Chandra Sekhar said, the police have established Biswas’s alleged links with a bookie in Mumbai. Biswas was allegedly involved in betting for the result of the match and also in spot fixing, which was to bet namely on the number of wides, no-balls and number of boundaries.

Mr. Chandra Sekhar said, “We are taking permission of the court to investigate the role of the Mumbai-based bookie.” If the Mumbai-based bookie is found to be involved in betting activities, then the police will consider invoking the Goonda Act (The Karnataka Prevention of Dangerous Activities of Bootleggers, Drug offenders, Gamblers, Goondas, Immoral Traffic Offenders and Slum Grabbers Act) 1985 against him.
