Mangaluru, July 19, 2016:The VI Additional District and Sessions Judge D.T. Puttarangaswamy on Monday sentenced Anand (25), a labourer, to imprisonment for 26 months on finding him guilty of making an attempt to murder his lover by pushing her into the Kumaradhara near Kadaba in September 2014.
The judge directed Anand to pay a fine of Rs. 10,000. Of this amount, Rs. 8,000 will be paid to the 20-year-old victim. He also asked the District Legal Services Authority to pay the woman and her one-year-old child compensation under the Karnataka Victim Compensation Scheme.
According to the charge-sheet by the Belthangady police, Anand had physical relationship with the woman on March 2, 2014 after promising her that he would marry her. Meanwhile, the woman became pregnant and she asked Anand to marry her. On the pretext of getting the child aborted, Anand took her to Subrahmanya on the evening of September 8, 2014. He stopped his vehicle midway on the bridge across the Kumaradhara near Kadaba saying that the motorcycle had developed a snag. As the woman was looking at the river that was in full flow, Anand came behind her and pushed her into the water.
The woman, who was then six months pregnant, managed to swim and stay on a tree in the midst of the river course that whole night. The next morning two fishermen rescued her and admitted her to the Puttur Government Hospital where she filed a complaint against Anand. The police arrested Anand on September 10.
