A domestic airport can be converted into an international airport only if it introduces immigration facilities and recruits the required employees to operate these facilities. India has 454 airports and airstrips, of which 97 airports and 28 civil enclaves at defense airfields are run by the Airport Authority of India (AAI).
Sixteen of them have already got the international tag, but many others are designated “limited international” and can only operate a restricted number of international flights.
The government’s plan is to encourage private investment for the establishment of 500 operational airports by 2020.
