Mangalore, Nov 15, 2012: Mangalore Institute of Oncology (MIO) Director Dr. Suresh Rao said that the MIO, a multi specialty cancer hospital at Pumpwell, will be inaugurated at 10:00 a.m. on Nov 18, Sunday.
He told the press today that the MIO was started by a group of oncologists, who were concerned about the rapid rise in cancer cases. He said that the MIO is dedicated to the treatment of cancer.
Speaking about the features of this hospital, he said that it is equipped with the new rapid arch treatment equipment, the second of its kind to be imported to India. The only other hospital that has this equipment is the Yashodha Hospital in Hyderabad. He said that the IMO aims at providing multi-specialty treatment to cancer patients at affordable rates.
Stating that 90% of cancer cases are preventable and curable, he said that the focus should be on preventing cancer rather than curing it. Speaking about the need to increase cancer awareness, he said that the hospital offers surgery, chemotherapy, and rehabilitation facilities. A cancer education cell has also been established for the education of students and government and private colleges have been asked to collaborate, he added.
Cancer Victors representatives will inaugurate the IMO, he said. Among those present will be Prof. Dr. M. Abdul Rahiman, former vice chancellor of Calicut and Kannur Universities; Prof. Dr. M. Vijayakumar, director of Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology; and Amith Yadav, general manager of Yuvraj Singh Foundation. Prof. Dr. M. Shantharam Shetty, pro chancellor of Nitte University, will preside over the event, he added.
MIO directors Dr. Sanath Hegde and Dr. Krishna Prasad, along with pain and palliative specialist Dr. Naveen were also present at the press meet.
