Mangalore, May 23: The citizens of Mangalore accompanied by the local politicians organized a condolence march on May 23, Sunday, in the city to express their heartfelt sympathy for the grieving families of the plane crash victims, considered to be among the worst aviation disasters witnessed in India. More than 200 citizens participated in the condolence event.
The condolence march commenced at Nehru Stadium. The citizens marched silently along the Lady Goshen Road and dispersed inside the compound of Wenlock Hospital.
District-in-charge Minister Krishna J. Palemar announced to the gathering that the district will observe a mourning period of one week, which commenced on Saturday, in honor of the crash victims. No government programmes will be conducted during this period, he said, urging the people to cooperate. He also announced the calling off of the Abbakka Utsava, which was scheduled to be held on May 22 – 23.
Declaring that this Saturday will remain a dark day in the history of India, MLA U. T. Khader urged the government to conduct an impartial enquiry into the mysterious crash and prevent such heart-breaking incidents from happening again.
