Mangaluru, Feb 20, 2016 : Friday’s temperature is 6 degree C above the normal mean max of 31.9 deg C for February. The earlier high for the decade for February was 38.2 deg C on February 28, 2012. The city experienced extreme temperatures of 37.2 deg C in February twice -- on February 10, 2005 and February 25, 2006.
"Friday’s temperature is an all-time record for February,’’ said Geeta Agnihotri, director in-charge, Meteorological Regional Observatory, Bengaluru.
The Panambur Weather Observatory recorded temperatures exceeding 36 deg C again on three occasions - 36.9 Deg C, 36.6 Deg C and 36.4 Deg C on February 1, 23 and 29 in 2011, 2007 and 2008 respectively.
Met Geeta said the coast will get some relief only after a fortnight. "Showers are expected in March, probably after March 8," she said. Regarding the reasons for such high temperatures, Geeta said the met department would have to analyse the previous year’s data to get answers to this phenomena.
