Mangaluru, Jan 30, 2016 : The Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute, a research body under the ICAR-CMFRI - Indian Council of Agricultural Research, will begin the month-long National Marine Fisheries Census-2016 in all maritime states and two Union territories on February 1.
The exercise will include collecting information about marine fishermens’ families, fishing crafts and gear, social and educational profile and demographic features of marine fishing villages. The last census was conducted in 2010. The exercise, funded by the department of animal husbandry, dairying and fisheries of the Centre’s ministry of agriculture and farmers welfare is being coordinated by the staff of the regional, research, field centres and headquarters of ICAR-CMFRI located along the maritime coast of the country.
About 3,000 enumerators trained by the ICAR-CMFRI will visit 11 lakh fisherfolk families spread across 4,250 marine fishing villages in 73 districts to collect details. The entire process would be monitored and supervised by about 220 officials of ICAR-CMFRI posted at 26 centres.
The data would be analysed by scientists of the ICAR-CMFRI to develop a comprehensive census database, which would be helpful in facilitating formulation of fisheries related plans and policies in the marine sector.
