Mangaloe, Dec. 10: Mayor M Shankar Bhat, the first citizen of Mangalore, visited Carstreet on Dec 11, Friday, and spoke to shop owners and home owners about the benefits of widening the road. He visited all the houses and shops and tried to convince the people to cooperate with the MCC and give up land for the road-widening project.

Later, he spoke to press persons and informed them that the people have agreed to give place for road widening. Some of them had been confused about the issue, but now everything has been made clear. He also said that the corporators are all doing a great job and that Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) holds the first place with regard to development work. An action plan, which requires a fund of Rs. 100 crore, will soon be set into motion.

Hanumanth Kamath of Nagarika Hitharakshana Vedike, spoke on behalf of the people and said that about 90 percent residents of Carstreet are willing to permit the road widening project. But 10 percent still oppose the project because the MCC has still not submitted the relevant documents to them. He also said that people have lost trust in government officials. Many are not clear about exactly how much land they are supposed to give up for the road widening project. If people get permission to reconstruct their shops, they will be ready to give up space for road widening in just a fortnight, he said.

Dinesh Shetty, Ranganath Kini, Mamatha Shenoy, and Corporator Rajendra were also present at the press conference.
