Minority fundamentalism as dangerous as Hindutva - Shriram Reddy

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, Oct 30, 2012: Religious fundamentalism on the part of minority communities is just as dangerous as communal Hindutva ideology, declared CPI(M) State Secretary G. V. Shriram Reddy after inaugurating a workshop on communalism at Town Hall today.

He said that, although minority religious fundamentalism has developed as a response to communal hatred spread by Hindutva forces, both forms of communalism and fundamentalism are dangerous and ought to be condemned.

Flaying the police department for its failure to check communal violence, Mr. Reddy said that senior police officers have stooped to the level of seeking apologies from RSS leaders for taking a Hindutva activist who was creating communal disturbance on Bakrid into custody. Accusing saffron forces of misusing police machinery, he said that no action has been taken against RSS leader Kalladka Prabhakar Bhat for delivering a hate speech. Instead the SP excused himself by saying that law and order situation will worsen if he is taken into custody.

Accusing the BJP of playing communal games to win the upcoming assembly elections, he said that neither the JD(S) nor the Congress have done nothing much to destroy communalism. Stating that the BJP is aware that it has lost popularity among the public, he said that the BJP-led state government has contributed nothing but scams and corruption, owing to which they had to play communal games to remain in power. After the Mangalore home stay attack, 17 different places across Koppala, Belgaum, Hubli, Gangavathi, Sindagi, and others have witnessed acts of communal violence. In spite of this, neither the Congress nor the JD(S) has done anything because they want to get Hindu votes while retaining minority votes.

Several CPI(M) workers and leaders were present.
