Monsoon foray by MACC Cyclists

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangaluru, june 18, 2016: It is reported that MACC, Mangalore Cycling Club,  initiated a series of weekend cycling rallies to the Western Ghats starting the World Environment Day on June 5 to raise awareness on positive environmental action.

Titled ‘Western Ghats – Our Lifeline’, the first rally of the series was organised to one of the most beautiful, yet challenging terrains of the region, Kudremukh. A group of 28 riders, in the 20-60 age group, participated in the rally. Many of them were riding the uphill road for the first time.  They covered the 24-km long climb, with an average gradient ranging between 4 per cent and 6 per cent, passing through SK Border (South Kanara Border) and Kerekatte from Mala.

The second rally on June 12 was more exiting. More than 35 riders, including those from the Udupi Cycling Club, rode to climb Agumbe Ghat from Someshwara and thereafter the Kundadri Hill, off Agumbe. Considered as one of the toughest climbs for any cyclist, ascending Kundadri was a dream come true for many.

The day which began from Someshwara saw riders of every age, experienced and a single woman, riding in unison, climbing Agumbe Ghat, one after the other.

Thereafter they regrouped and set out for 15 km of a roller-coaster ride before ascending the Kundadri. This short, but steep ride, takes an elevation of 350 m in a ride of 3 km.

The sole woman rider, Maria Fernandes, promised to come back with more woman riders the next time. The group had about eight children aged under 16.
