More than 700 boats, structures cleared on river banks

Mangaluru, June 19, 2016: In accordance with, DK DCs order to lift boats and other equipment from river banks due to ban on sand extraction during the monsoon, the district administration till June 18, Saturday removed more than 700 boats.

A release from DK DC said apart from boats, about 150 temporary structures erected to facilitate sand extraction have also been got demolished. The administration ensured that over 700 labourers, most of whom are from northern parts of the country, who were engaged in sand extraction, were asked to leave the areas.

Meanwhile, officials concerned got the banks of Gurupura (Phalguni)) river cleared of temporary structures and the garbage accumulated, under the supervision of Senior Geologist of Mines and Geology Department Nagendrappa.

Geologist Nagendrappa told correspondents that as on date, no boat can be found on the banks of rivers in the district.
