Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, June 21, 2014: The Government Wenlock Hospital in the city will soon have a new building with all infrastructures to conduct autopsies. The building that houses viscera preservation units and body freezer is coming up at a cost of Rs 20.35 lakh.

The new block, with separate waiting halls for relatives of the deceased and landscaped garden, will be ready in a month. This will also serve as a centre for training of doctors in autopsy and other advanced technologies. Another feature of the new block is that it will have sufficient space to keep unidentified bodies for long time.

The government took the decision to develop infrastructure of the mortuary as it has recorded maximum number of autopsies in the past five years. The 166 years-old hospital has performed 4,041 autopsies in that time averaging 808 autopsies in a year.

Wenlock Hospital medical superintendent H R Rajeshwari said the new facility is coming up based on the directions of health and family minister UT Khader. "Doctors from rural areas can learn new techniques to conduct autopsy at the centre.

There will a humanitarian approach towards relatives of the deceased at the center," she added. Several patients from Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Uttar Kannada, Chikmagalur, Shimoga, Kodagu, Hassan, Davangere and neighbouring districts of Kerala depend on the hospital as it offers free super speciality care for BPL families.
