Mangalore, Jul 2, 2012: A woman jumped into a well with her 3-year-old daughter at Hosakaveri, Kinnigoli on July 1, Sunday. While the mother died of drowning, the daughter miraculously escaped death.
The deceased is Padmini (28), daughter of Pushpa of Mogaveerapatna in Ullal. She was the wife of Chandrahas Shettigar of Hosakaveri, who owns a flower stall in Haleangady. Their 3-year-old daughter Shivani goes to nursery school. The family was living with Mohan, Chandrahas’ brother-in-law, and his wife Geetha.
On Sunday, Chandrahas left for work as usual. Since Padmini usually wakes up late in the morning, nobody suspected that anything was wrong with her when she did not emerge from her room. Later, Geeta went to the well to fetch water and noticed that the rope was released into the well. She peeped in and was shocked to see Padmini and Shivani in the water. She immediately raised an alarm and the workers at a nearby construction site rushed to the rescue. Although they succeeded in bringing the mother and the daughter out of the well, Padmini could not be saved. Shivani, who was hanging onto the rope, managed to survive.
Padmini’s family says that her in-laws were tormenting her.
The neighbors said that they do not know anything because Chandrahas and his family hardly mingled with them.
The Mulky police have registered a case.
