Murderer sentenced to life imprisonment

Mangaluru, Feb 15, 2017: First Additional District and Sessions Judge C.M. Joshi on Feb 14, Tuesday sentenced to life Jayanta (28) on finding him guilty of murdering his wife Jayanti and attempting to murder their newborn son at a primary health centre in Moodbidri five years ago.


On February 9, 2017  the judge convicted Jayanta, a resident of Tenka Yedapadavu, of hacking his wife Jayanti (24) to death at the health centre on June 20, 2012 after she gave birth to a male child on June 18 that year.

He was also convicted of making an attempt to murder the newborn child.  He had thrown his son to a corner in the health centre before leaving the place, the police said.  The judge sentenced Jayanta to life for offences under Sections 302 (murder) and 307 (attempt to murder) of the Indian Penal Code, respectively.

The judge also imposed a fine of Rs. 5,000 for each one of the offences. The judge sentenced Jayanta to seven years rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs. 3,000 for the offence under Section 326 (causing grievous injury to the child) of the Indian Penal Code.

He was also sentenced to one year imprisonment and asked to pay a fine of Rs. 1,000 for the offence under Section 506 (criminal intimidation) of Indian Penal Code.  The judge said that while the life sentence will run concurrently, the other two terms of imprisonment will run consequently.  The judge directed the District Legal Services Authority to consider paying compensation to the four-year-old son of Jayanta under the Karnataka Victim Compensation Scheme.
