Mangalore Today News Network

Mangalore, May 21: The National Institute of Technology Karnataka (NITK), which has been selected as the coordinator of the Direct Admission of Students Abroad (DASA) scheme  by the Union Ministry for Human Resources and Development for a period of 3 years from the academic year 2010 - 11 has revamped its admission process by making available course applications online.

NITK Director Sandeep Sancheti said that students can now fill and submit applications online in addition to facilities such as choice filling, counselling, fee payment, and seat allotment. He said that this new development makes the process of admission simpler, more transparent, less time consuming, and less prone to errors.

DASA facilitates admission of foreign students, PIOs/NRIs to the technological institutions of India, including 3 IIITs, 24 NITs, 3 institutions funded by the centre, and 1 deemed university. A total of 31 premier institutions all over the country are offering over 2,200 seats for different disciplines of engineering.

Sancheti said that, although only BTech courses are available currently, MTech, MBA, MCA, MSc, and PhD will soon be made available in the DASA scheme from the following academic year. He said that more that 800 admissions are expected this year and hopes that the number of students will go up to 2000 next year.

Besides the availability of online forms, a number of other changes have also been made such as seat allotment based on candidate’s SAT-II (Scholastic Aptitude Test) scores in Maths, Chemistry, and Physics.

Moreover, the application fee has been reduced to USD 250. The tuition fee of USD 4000 remains unaltered. Sancheti said that the application fee might be brought down to USD 100 in following years. The application process commenced on April 1, he said and added that students can submit their applications along with the required documents on or before June 30.

Online applications and eligibility schedules are available at the DASA website www.dasanit.org as well as the NITK website www.nitk.ac.in.
