Mangalore Today News Network

Mangaluru, June 10, 2017: Addressing media on the proposed deputy commissioner office complex premises on June 9, Friday, Vedike secretary Shashidhara Shetty said the case lies before the National Green Tribunal (NGT) and the next hearing will be on July 17.

t is reported that Rashtriya Parisarasaktara Vedike has condemned the move of the DK district administration to fell the trees at the government nursery, Padil, to build the new deputy commissioner’s office complex at a cost of Rs 40 crore.

’False information’ : He said the district-level deemed forest committee has given false information through Information and Publicity department that the trees in the government nursery in Padil, which is identified for new DC’s office complex, are planted and are not naturally grown.

Shetty said that as per the definition of the deemed forest, the forest should have two hectare land with 50 naturally-grown trees or 100 planted trees with 30 metre width to the chest level.

The district administration tried to keep the land out of the definition of deemed forest by providing false information that the land is only 1.91 hectare in area. There are 383 trees, among which 66 are natural trees and 326 are planted. But as per the survey conducted by the NECF, there were 502 trees of different varieties including mango, cashew, jack fruit, rain tree, bamboo, banyan, Indian rosewood, Malabar marking nut, wild almond, soapnut, teak and so on. Apart from variety of trees there are bats, porcupines, wild cats, mongooses, peacocks and other birds, Shetty said.

On one hand, the government is felling trees while on the other hand, it organises Vruksha Laksha campaign, he criticised.

Case in NGT : Advocate Suma Nayak had individually filed a case in the NGT in this regard on April 26, 2016. Since then, there have been three hearings. The district-level deemed forest committee did not turn up for two hearings. Therefore, the NGT has rejected the application by the district administration and slammed a fine of Rs 10,000, Shetty explained.

NECF office-bearers and members Swarnasundar, Rathnakar, Kalavathi Padmanabh, Anita Bhandarkar, Shripathi Acharya, Narayana, Raghu, Rajendra Kumar and Twaja were present.
