New UGD drainage network for Mangaluru

New UGD drainage network for Mangaluru

Mangalore Today News Network

Mangaluru, Aug 3, 2016: Though a UGD, underground drainage project taken up in the city more than a decade ago remains incomplete, the government has proposed to take up another project of laying a sewer network covering 150 km, estimated to cost Rs. 150 crore.

The council of the MCC, Mangaluru City Corporation has given its approval for the preliminary design report of the upcoming Phase II of the project.  According to it, the new project will cover areas which did not have a sewer network in the first phase taken up since 2003 covering 360 km. The upcoming project will also join the missing network of pipelines of the Phase I project in about 30 places.

Like the Phase I project, KUIDFC, Karnataka Urban Infrastructure Development and Finance Corporation will also implement the Phase II project by drawing a loan from the ADB, Asian Development Bank.

The PDR, preliminary design report has identified 50 places in the city to lay the new network. Those places had been left out earlier. Some of such areas identified are areas behind Kulashekara church, Kudupu, Padavu, Neerumarga, Vamanjoor, Padil, Morgan’s Gate, Thiruvail, Tadambail, Kannur, Mahakalipadpu, Bajal, Jeppinamogaru, Gujjarakere area and Alape. The corporation has not provided house connection to the UGD network in areas like Yekkur, Jeppinamogaru and Bajal as there were missing links in the network laid earlier.

Now, among 30 such areas having missing links of the network identified included Attavar 6th cross road, Vaidyanath Nagara, Vyasanagara, Kadri Kambla, Jeppinamogaru Aadimaye temple to Kadekar, Padil Kembar Shivanagara and Bejai.

Wet wells have been proposed under the new project at Panjimogaru, Gandhi Nagara, Thiruvail, Ummikan maidan, Saripalla, Kannur, Surathkal light house, Idya and Kodipady.

The report has proposed to build sewage lifting stations at 10 places. They are at Mukka, Idya, Padukadu, Chitrapura, Raikatte, Kavoor Vidyanagara, Kunjathbail, Korantady in Kavoor, Marakada, Nadumane Road and Kudupu.

The Phase I project is not free from issues. At a meeting with A.B. Ibrahim, former Deputy Commissioner, here last month the corporation officials said that some manholes in Surathkal area had collapsed.  The manholes had been built using laterite stones instead of concrete. There was seepage in the network at many places. Pipelines laid underground were uneven. The network has polluted the areas as sewage was flowing in open drains.

The 90-km long underground pipelines from Hosabettu, Kulai, Katipalla and Surathkal areas were connected to the 16.5 million litres-a-day capacity sewage treatment plant at Surathkal.

Current Case :  In Pandeshwar-Bolar near the Rosario area,  a major drainage was over flowing for near 3 months. partly it was bad work more so that it could not handle the sweage load with a high rise coming up there. Finally a laborious work, of breaking the concrete was done one a two week period and pipes and concrete manholes were laid. Now the road stretch which caters to Hoigebazar/ State Bank  with many schools, and a major populated and transport area with the old port too is in dug up, disturbed and dangerous condition. This needs urgent attention of MCC.
