Mangalore, Oct 26, 2012 : The Shridevi Nritya Kendra of Mangalore conferred the title of Nritya Kalatapasaswini on Padma Subrahmanyam of Chennai, noted Bharatanatyam dancer, in commemoration of the year-long celebration of founder Ms. Jayalakshmi Alva’s 80th birthday.

The title was conferred on Ms. Subrahmanyan in recognition and appreciation of the innovations introduced by her into the art of Bharatnataym. Ms. Alva presented Ms. Subrahmanyam with a basket of fruits, a shawl, a memento, and a cash prize.

Speaking after accepting the honor, the great dancer offered to perform in Mangalore as part of the year-long birthday celebrations. She also said that this was the 60th year of her stage performances.

Sharing her experiences with Ms. Alva, she recalled that Ms. Alva had performed the role of Bhama in the kriti Krishnatulabhara composed by their guru K. N. Dandayudhpani Pillai and choreographed by Ms. Subrahmanyam’s mother Meenakshi.

Expressing her appreciation of Mangalore, she said that Mangalore is a beautiful city dotted with important temples such as Kollur Mookambika and Durgaparameshwari Temple of Kateel.

Aarathi Shetty, daughter of Ms. Alva, announced that monthly programs will be held as part of her mother’s year-long birthday celebrations.

Asranna, chief priest of Kateel Temple, inaugurated the event on this occasion. B. M. Hegde, former vice chancellor of Manipal Academy of Higher Education, and M. Mohan Alva of Alva’s Education Foundation were also present.
